My scale modeling workbench has had a lot of re-works over the last year or so and because I make models for a living I needed my craft table area to work for me in a way that meant that I could just sit and start whatever project I was working on.
My modelling studio and how It works best for me
First things first!
Lighting
Lighting is a massive subject all on its own and I will cover this subject in the future in its own blog as it is a subject so many overlook but is essential if you want to get the most out of whatever craft-hobby you are into. My desk is positioned right under a skylight and I have two large spotlights either side of my workspace that have Photsel 55w 220-240v 5500k daylight bulbs in them. This gives me even lighting from both angles and gives me a true indication of the colours when I mix and apply them to my projects.
Organisation and Storage
This is key for smooth work flow. Being able to put your hand on tools etc and knowing exactly where everything is leads to a more enjoyable experience and I would put this at a strong second place when it comes to setting up your space. I have found that keeping my most used item right in front of me within hands reach helps me to concentrate and focus and helps to keep my mind at rest when working. You will have your own ideas when it come to storage but I opted for a simple tiered system which is just a nail varnish storage unit. This labelled storage unit with clear fronted (This is the one I Use) which I then labelled the drawers so I could locate items easily.
Tools
When it comes to materials, I use my tried and trusted brand which I have refined over the years. I would recommend doing a lot of testing when it comes to the products you use in your work. I need to know that I can grab an item and it will give me the desired finish I need. Paints I use are always Tamiya XF and X range of acrylic paints as they are easy to mix with Mr color levelling thinner and flow well in my airbrush. I also love the Mr hobby aqueous range and find that they work in a very similar way to the Tamiya range and are trusted by most modellers that have been making models for a long time. I will also use the Vallejo range of Model Color paints for any hand painting I do and they are water based so easily mixed and thinned down when needed.
For any enamel effects I need to use I reach for the Mig Ammo range and they have you covered with whatever effect you are after. They are easy flowing with great manipulation properties when you need to refine a finish.
When it comes to varnishes I always turn to VMS and Vallejo (water based) products as they give me consistent results and mix well and flow nicely with my airbrush.
My airbrush is a cheap Timbertech brand that has served me well and I have put it through he ringer and it still keeps on chugging 🙂
I use a Dremel for all my model modifications and it has so many different attachments from drill bits to cutting tools.
My other tools in crude tweezers which are by Tweezerman and are the best for keeping there shape and grip when you most need it. I also use revel sprue cutters and a Tamiya scribber.
Make Your Space Your Own
It has taken me a couple of years to really get to a place where I am happy with my work space so its fine if you tweet your own area and make it really work for you and not against you. My workspace fills me with inspiration every time I sit down to work and I would love for you to have the same experience. Modelling is a fantastic pastime and having a space that works with you is very rewarding.
